136. Turkey siestas...

The turkeys are now properly free-range from dawn to dusk. Quite well-behaved now that I have improved the 4 gates of their paddock and of course having earlier clipped their wings.

They are very social and go round together as a gang. They like a siesta; usually two a day; they return to the house and all lie down in a heap.


Plums and apples are now being harvested thick and fast. We started with the ones next to the road - we were amazed at the weekend how many walkers stop and help themselves!

285. Been thinking about my last blog . . .

. . . even if no-one else has. One of the implications of much of an apple's goodness (minerals and vitamins) being in its seeds is that to benefit they have to be eaten. And not just eaten but chewed up as apple seeds tend simply to be passed. I then remembered something about apple pips containing cyanide. I began to look into all this . . . There are hundreds and hundreds of web snippets on the benefits of eating apples, an apple a day keeps the doctor away and all that. But quite difficult to shore it up with trusted sources. A medium-sized apple weighs 150g - 200g and contains half that number of calories. 80% is water, 10% is carbohydrate, 0.5% protein and 4% minerals and vitamins. Half the minerals and vitamins and fibre are in the peel and the core. Apple pips contain amygdalin which can release cyanide when coming contact with digestive enzymes. 117. The Frankenpear story (Part II)...

A few months after the initial grafting I received an email from my friend Nick asking how my 'Frankenpears' were. Frankenpears? I had no idea what he was taking about. 'Frankenpears' were not in the dictionary, and google did not have the foggiest either. It was a while - an embarrassing while - until I realised he was referring to my pear-on-hawthorn grafts. During my search Google had come up with 'Frankenfish'  http://www.livescience.com/25799-frankenfish-salmon-gmo.html  Clearly, Nick is ahead of his time. Now, of course, looking up 'Frankenpears' on Google returns my blog entries!
